Ryan Adams turns 36 today and I figured it was as good a time as any to begin an album-by-album thread. With someone as prolific as Ryan, it is easy to get caught up in all of the lost albums, released and unreleased rarities, side projects, and experiments. It opens with a bouncy Dylan-esque number and then just settles into this sparse place. A place almost everybody has been before. That sense of longing, pain, and need. The familiarity of this album is what draws in former Whiskeytown lovers. It's like a continuation, but with all of the frills of steel guitar and fiddle stripped away. A lot of the time just a man and his guitar.

So simplistic, so pure. Unfortunately this would be one of the last times he tread down the well worn path of Whiskeytown and would start to experiment, leaving a lot of his Alt. Country fanbase scratching their heads and not wanting to follow him. Anyone who loves this album MUST check out two of the (more or less official) b-sides from this era: 'Goodbye Honey' -on several compilations and on a 2 disc french pressing, also on iTunes. There have been times I've just listened to this song on repeat. Easily as good as any other song on the album proper. 'Monday Night' - on a Bloodshot Records compilation disc, also on iTunes.

Oh man, what a beautiful album. Could do with fewer songs in my opinion, but they all work well here. I believe the album was recorded completly analog and you can really feel the warmth throughout. I love the 50's/60's style album cover, which perfectly compliments the music within. Now the songs. Oh My Sweet Carolina, Come Pick Me Up and Call Me On Your Way Back Home are phenomenal songs, the kind that stop you in your tracks. I saw Ryan perform OMSC solo with a cello/violin accompaniment, which was the most stunning musical performance I ever witnessed.
