I've been looking around for a used MIG welder and I've found a couple that sound good but I need some info from the brain trust here. First up, a guy has an older (from the mid-90's) Snap-On MIG welder that I'm interested in. I'm sure being a Snap-On its good quality, but being that vintage I'm sure I'll need parts for it.

Are replacement parts for those also ridiculously freaking expensive just like anything else that comes on the white and red truck? Are most common parts on a Snap-On welder interchangeable with any other brand, that I might perhaps be able to pick up at a local welding supply shop? It would be a hassle, not to mention my suspicion of very expensive, to try and flag down a Snap-On truck for some little welder part.

Next up, I've found what looks like an OK deal on a Marquette MIG welder. I'd never heard of them before, are they any good? I did a quick google and saw they were bought up by Lincoln a couple years ago. Thanks for any insights on either of these.

Yeah I'd like a Miller 210 like everyone else but I'm a poor bastard. Well I went and looked at the Snap-On today. It was a big 225 Amp model, with the power source on the bottom and the wire feeder on the top in a separate enclosure, all on a cart. It came with a big bottle, Tweco gun, 50' power cable, etc. It looks to be 10-15 years old but seems to be in pretty good shape.

I thought it was a good deal at $700 but the guy didn't have a place to plug it in to test it, and wouldn't give me a guarantee. He swears it works, but says once it leaves his possession its a done deal.

So I said thanks but no thanks, I'm not going to risk 7 bills on a potential paper weight. I talked to the guy with the Marquette and its a 160 amp for $325.

Still probably a good price but I decided to pass on it due to the lack of any feedback on this brand. I've decided to just bite the bullet and buy a brand new welder, for peace of mind and guaranteed source for parts and service. I'm looking at the Lincoln 175 at Home Depot for $599. Another possibility is that I might be able to get a deal on a Miller from my company. I work at an RV manufacturing company (in the office though, not out in the plant), and we must have a couple hundred Miller welders scattered around the plant, so I'm sure we have some sort of sweet deal. I'll talk to our facilities manager on Monday to see if I can get any kind of a bargain through the company.

If I can get a MM 175 for the same price or less than the Home Depot Lincoln, I'd rather do that. Well no sooner had I made that last post than I got a call back from someone I'd left a message with who had a Hobart welder for sale. It turned out to be a Hobart Beta-Mig 250. I went over today to look at it, and ended up bringing it home. From the small amount of research I've done, it appears to be a discontinued model (replaced by the Ironman 250, I would guess) so I don't know how old it is, but it is nearly showroom clean. It came with a bottle, regulator, almost a full spool of.030, and two helmets.
