Prior to this, Mae was primarily a classical musician. Featuring covers of classical pieces, as well as songs written by Mae herself, and for her by producer Mike Batt, ‘The Violin Player’ is a high-octane, energetic glance at how classical influences can be implemented into modern music. Played flawlessly by Mae, her violin playing is breathtaking at such a young age (16 at the time of this albums release), and it’s apparent that here is a young artist with unlimited potential. However, the album sounds pretty cheesy by today’s standards.

Other than the violin, most of the instruments are replicated through keyboards and machines. The machine drumming quickly becomes repetitive, and most of the other “instruments” sound equally lame. However, in fairness, it doesn’t really make much difference to the songs themselves, other than to supply some cheeky grins here and there at how corny it sounds. None of this is a detriment, though, as the record flows smoothly, and with some stellar performances in songs like ‘Contradanza’, ‘Toccata and Fugue in D Minor’, ‘Red Hot’, ‘Classical Gas’, ‘Warm Air’ and ‘Jazz Will Eat Itself’, it’s evident that ‘The Violin Player’ is an exceptional album that introduced a whole new generation to classical music. Fasten your seatbelts.
