Reports from a community meeting say Denver will lose its last traditional, and historically black high school. Manual High, which has been subjected to radical experimentation for more than a decade, will join Montbello High in the dustbin, a casualty of a privatization trend that has seen public schools close to be replaced, in many cases, by charter schools. A Bill Gates-driven experiment to create numerous small schools at Manual failed, despite the then fashionable “small schools” movement, into which Gates dropped millions. The school was then summarily closed for a year by Senator Michael Bennet, in one of his first acts as Denver Schools Superintendent. He later remarked that the closure was a mistake. The school was then “restarted” with a new staff, and has had a revolving door in the principal’s office, including a highly touted ‘white knight’ from a private school, who clashed with districts mandates, and was widely believed to have been forced out by current schools strongman Tom Boasberg, who has fired thousands of teachers while closing or ‘transforming’ dozens of schools.
