Universal owned the rights to Oswald from the start - Walt Disney's studio created the character in 1927 and made the first batch of Oswald cartoons for film producer Charles Mintz of Winkler Pictures (named after Mintz wife Margaret Winkler, who retired from the business after they married), who sold the films (and the character rights) to Universal. In 1928, when Disney went to New York to sign a contract renewal, Mintz told Disney that he had to accept a lower advance fee for each Oswald cartoon, and that he'd already signed up many of the Disney animators to come work directly for Winkler if he refused. Disney did indeed refuse, and Winkler set up its own cartoon staff to make Oswald cartoons for Universal, while Walt and the few staffers who remained loyal to him went on to make new cartoons about some sort of a mouse.

Universal wasn't pleased with Mintz or the Winkler cartoon staff, and did to Mintz what he'd done to Disney: they fired Mintz and the Winkler staff and set up their own cartoon studio run by Walter Lantz and Bill Nolan to make Oswald cartoons, which continued in production up to about 1936. The Walter Lantz studio later became its own independent company (still releasing through Universal, save for a 1947-49 defection to United Artists) which created Woody Woodpecker, Andy Panda, and Chilly Willy. By the time they came along, Oswald had been redesigned as a 'cuter' white bunny rabbit and was primarily appearing in comic books rather than cartoons. He made his final appearance in a cartoon called 'The Egg-Cracker Suite' in 1943.
