I just did a couple of projects InstallShield Express, a version of InstallShield I don’t have much experience with. It was an interesting experience that I’ll share.

Of course, InstallShield Express is a lesser version of InstallShield Professional and Premier. You can create nice installations with it but you don’t have several things. To highlight, there are no component and no Component Wizard, is no InstallScript view (a big deal) and no Direct Editor. You can create custom actions, but you are limited to three types. Thankfully, InstallShield Express has prerequisites. I actually did the project first in InstallShield Professional, had everything working and then found out that I needed to use InstallShield Express. I then recreated the project in Express and copied the 14 prerequisite definitions to the Express version’s Setup Prerequisites folder.

Now, why did I do that? It turns out Express lets you include prerequisites, but not edit them.

However, if you have the Professional or Premier version, you can edit them there, then copy them to the proper Express folder. Everything will work fine. 5 May, 2013 By. In an InstallScript-based installation, people often wonder how to enable or disable the status dialog that is displayed during the file transfer phase of an installation. It’s actually quite easy.

In the default InstallScript event handlers OnFirstUIBefore, OnFirstUIAfter, OnMaintUIBefore and OnMaintUIAfter, there are calls to the Enable() and Disable() functions which control the display of the status dialog. The screenshot below is of the end of the OnFirstUIBefore handler and the beginning of the OnFirstUIAfter handler. There are also different types of status dialogs that can be displayed based on the parameter passed to Enable() and Disable(). When you use it, InstallShield will organize your files into components for you. For example, when you select the Best Practices option, it will ensure that some of the components will not contain multiple files. In other words, there will only be one Assembly file (DLL, EXE, OCX, etc.), one Font file and one Help file per component.
