You might also want to step back, install an instance on a USB stick and run HDD diagnostics since this appears to be a first-time installation. Do a 100% destructive write test (if you want to blow it all away and don't care what is on the hdd). Otherwise do a full read only test. The HDD itself could be bad and doing deep recovery.
